A website for an independent brand: organise your catalogue beyond social posts
A customer finds a product in an old post and discovers its current version is different. Someone else wants to compare options but must scroll through a feed.
A customer finds a product in an old post and discovers its current version is different. Someone else wants to compare options but must scroll through a feed. An independent brand may initially need an organised catalogue rather than a complete online store. The website should explain products and support the commercial process that actually exists.
Define the catalogue's job
List categories, variants, materials, availability and conditions requiring confirmation. If orders depend on conversation or made-to-order production, explain that step. A button opening an enquiry should not be labelled as a completed purchase.
In a hypothetical brand offering objects with different finishes and agreed production times, a page with dimensions, care instructions, authorised images and a contextual enquiry may suit the workflow better than checkout assuming immediate stock. The brand story supports the offer but does not replace product details.
| Model | Required operating capability |
|---|---|
| Catalogue with enquiry | Current information and contextual requests |
| Online checkout | Stock, pricing, payment and order operation |
| Made-to-order work | Choices, confirmation and responsibilities |
Standardise one category first
Separate stable information from changing details and assign an update owner. Decide whether unavailable products remain visible and how their state is communicated. An outdated catalogue without status information creates expectations that are harder to correct later.
Use permitted images showing relevant differences, with useful descriptions. Generic photography should not represent products you do not offer. Visitors should be able to compare items and locate contact on a phone without depending on an automatic carousel.
Plan editing and possible growth
Categories and product pages should be editable through the CMS. The data model can accommodate variants without implementing every possibility in the first release. Online selling later requires payment, inventory, fulfilment and support decisions; an additional button does not provide those capabilities.
My website service can structure the catalogue, identity and enquiry journey. Existing stock or order tools may be connected through API integrations rather than duplicated.
Bring representative product information, disclosable material and the actual path to order confirmation. Explain what changes for each commission so the proposal can distinguish presentation, enquiries and real commerce.
